Zašto je boks bio toliko popularan u celom svetu tokom celog 20. veka i zašto su za njegove zvezde znali svi uzrasti celoga sveta?
Za razliku od većine sportova, boks je gotovo uvek imao onog jednog, najjačeg, najbrutalnijeg, onoga koji je obeležio svoje razdoblje i bio sposoban jednim udarcem protivnika da izbaci iz ringa.
Kao sport, boks postoji mnogo godina. Kao moderna sportska disciplina zaživeo je još početkom 18. veka, a većina današnjih pravila i podela na težinske kategorije ustanovljena su sredinom 19. veka u Engleskoj.
Procvat popularnosti došao je tek početkom 20. veka i osnivanjem NBA (kasnije WBA) bokserske organizacije koja je dala svetske prvake teške kategorije, borce koji su se pamtili i nakon svrgavanja sa trona.
Iako je danas najčešća slika završetka bokserskog meča slika sudija koji mozgaju o tome kome je pripala pobeda, uz zvezde koje su postojale u 20. veku, sudijske odluke su bile retkost. Slika koju želimo gledati je ona na kojoj jedan borac pobjedonosno napušta ring, dok drugoga iznose iz njega. Evo i ljudi koji su tu sliku često pretvarali u realnost.

Prvi pravi priznati svetski prvak teške kategorije. Još kao klinac je pobegao od kuće i počeo se čeličiti na ulici, da bi s tek napunjenih 26 godina postao svetski prvak.
Bio je prvi poznati knock-out artist, a slavu mu je doneo njegov prepoznatljivi knock-out u prvoj rundi - tako se završavala većina njegovih borbi. Popularan je bio zbog svoje agresivnosti i kiše udaraca kojom je znao zasuti protivnika. Svetsku titulu je osvojio upravo tako što je protivniku polomio vilicu, jagodične kosti, rebra i izazvao gubitak sluha na jednom uvetu. Titulu je izgubio 1926. (nakon sedam godina uspešnih odbrana) od Gene Tunneya...
